John Bruce Wheeler, 70, a lifelong resident of Hampton, died Tuesday, April 4, 2023. John graduated from Hampton High School in 1970 and the University of Richmond in 1974.   He worked for 40 years as a general sales manager in concrete, beginning at Chisman Concrete and later at Branscome Concrete.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cece Wheeler, his daughter Jessica Wheeler Chesson (Ralph), his two sons, Luke Wheeler and Josh Wheeler (Stephanie), his brother Bob Wheeler, his sister-in-law, Sally Cook, and brother-in-law RW Clark.  He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jack and Henry Chesson, Willow Wheeler, and Miles Wheeler.

John was predeceased by his parents, Charley and Martha Wheeler, his two sisters, Laura Marie Wheeler and Ellen Jennefer Clark, his brother, Grey Charles Wheeler, and his granddaughter Caroline Elise Wheeler.

John didn't know a stranger and was a friend to everyone he met.  He loved sports and was a star baseball and basketball player at Hampton High and the University of Richmond.  He was a member of the 1969 Crabber state championship basketball team, one of the highlights of his life. An avid golfer, he played as often as he could.  He was a kind, generous man who will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 15, 2023, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either CHKD or Edmarc Hospice for Children.
