IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John C.
Thorstad
June 12, 1968 – July 4, 2017
John C. Thorstad, of Hampton, a loving and devoted father, son, brother and husband, died Tuesday, July 4th, 2017. He was 49 years old. Born at Chanute Air Force Base, in Rantoul, Illinois, to John and Alyce Thorstad on June 12th, 1968, John grew up as a proud Air Force brat living in Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Carolina, England and Germany. John attended high school in Bitburg, Germany, graduating in 1987. Many of John's fondest memories were of the great friends that he made there and the adventures that they had traveling through Europe. Upon graduation, John joined the United States Air Force where he served with distinction for ten years. A veteran of Desert Storm, John received numerous decorations including the Air Force Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Specializing in heating and air conditioning, he worked for J&J Maintenance and the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport before becoming his own boss in 2006 when he and his wife started Taylor Contracting. John could fix anything. When he wasn't at work, John enjoyed riding his Harley and shooting pool. But he was never too busy to help a friend in need. He always had time to give and seemed to have a knack for getting the job done right. 'Whispering John' as one friend referred to him, will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his wife, Amy, his son, John Devan and girlfriend, Paula Dooley of Florida, his mother, Alyce, sister, Jodi Haganman and her children, Tara Thorstad, Drew Haganman, and Evan Haganman all of Indianapolis; in laws William and Jean Lawrence and brother-in-law Paul Lawrence and wife April of Williamsburg; nieces and nephews Robert, Clarice, Addie, Katie and John as well numerous extended family members and friends. We would be remiss not to mention the many special friends John had from Tidemill Cafe, Cozzy's Comedy Club and Hilton Tavern Brewing Company.
John was preceded in death by his father, John B. Thorstad and his step-daughter, Taylor.
