Obituary

John Hulen Stokes, 83, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013. He was born in Ft. Deposit, Alabama and has been a resident of Hampton since 1957. He retired from the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School as a Math Instructor after 35 years.

He was a member of Calvary Assembly of God where he was on its church board as the treasurer. He was a Chaplain at the Hampton City Jail for 25 years. He attended and taught Sunday school at Wallace Memorial United Methodist Church for many years, was a member of the Phoebus Lions Club, the Education Committee at Newport News Shipbuilding, and enjoyed teaching and helping young men succeed.

John was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Hulda Stokes; brothers, William, Bradley and Russell Stokes; and sister, Nancy Vigo. He is survived by his wife Ann; daughters, Patricia Spencer and Nancy Conner (Jeff); grandchildren, Curtis and Tate Conner, John Spencer (Caitlain), and Kristen Spencer; and many nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be from 10:30-11:00 am Monday at Calvary Assembly of God, 1380 N Mallory St. in Hampton. Immediately following at 11:00, John's life will be celebrated. Interment will follow at 2:00 pm at Clark Cemetery.
