IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John David
Rose
December 26, 2023
John David Rose, known to those who loved him as "David", Daddy, Pop, or PopPop passed away peacefully surrounded by family, at the age of 82, on December 26, 2023.
David was the oldest child, born to the late John and Margaret (Atchley) Rose on June 28, 1941, in Maryville, Tennessee. Following his graduation from Everett High School in 1959, David enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his service, he was stationed on the Eastern Shore, where he met Barbara "Bobbie" Clayton. The two were married on December 5, 1962, and went on to have three daughters, Donna, Jackie, and Jan. While in the Air Force, David was a member of the 23rd Wing Air Command as an E-6 Technical Sergeant. He lived many places while serving his country and was last deployed to the Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand. Once David left the military, he was trained as an engineer by Control Data Corporation. In 1969, David and his family settled in Hampton, Virginia, where he went to work as a Senior Systems Engineer with the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA). He retired from Control Data Corporation/NASA in 1994.
David learned to play the guitar at a young age and played on the local radio station in Knoxville, TN. He became a skilled musician of many instruments and played in various bands. David had many hobbies, hunting, fishing, visiting flea markets and auction houses, working on antique clocks, watching NASCAR, but the most loved was country and bluegrass festivals. He enjoyed tinkering and rebuilding computers and small appliances. He even built his family's first colored television.
Most importantly to David, he could frequently be found spending time with his loved ones. He was always proud to show his support for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren by attending and wearing apparel for their extracurricular activities. If there was ever a baby in the family, he wanted them to be in his arms. David was a man of few words but could surprise you with his quick-witted humor. He never fell short on showing his love to those near and dear to his heart.
David is survived by his wife, Bobbie Rose; Donna and Scott Jones, their children, Connor, Blayne, Aaron, and Zack, Jackie and Joe Johnson, their children, Jonathan (Kristen), Ashley (Carson), Nick (Erica), and Katie, and Jan and Chris Burgess, their children, Morgan (Zach), Brooke (Brent), and Chase; great-grandchildren, Saylor, Emmabelle, Caroline, Nova, Willow, Meadow, Sullivan, Aspen, Hazel, Caiden, and Juniper; and his sister, Autumn Rose Luthardt.
The family will receive friends from 2-4:00 PM Saturday, January 6, 2024, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave. in Hampton, 757-723-3191.
