John B. Karpa, Jr., 94, passed peacefully in his sleep on Monday, July 30, 2018. Born in Newport News to Mary B. and John B. Karpa, Sr., he had lived in Yorktown for most of his life. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943-1946. After his discharge, he earned his Bachelors Degree in Engineering and went to work for Basic Construction Company, retiring in 1972. He then went to work for Riverside Hospital as an Administrative Engineer, retiring again in 1989. John was an avid hunter and woodworker. He loved being on the water boating, fishing, kayaking, and tubing. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who asked for his help.

Preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Karpa, his son, Stephen L. Karpa, and his siblings, Charlie Karpa and Jackie Garrison; survivors include his children, John B. Karpa, III and his two sons, Geoff (Annie) and Sean (Chelsy); Julianne Karpa; and Marylou K. Knowles and her children, Melissa, Adam (Jillian), and Leigh; his grandson Stephen; and four great-grandchildren and another on the way.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 PM, Monday, August 6, 2018 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. The family will receive friends in the social hall following the mass.
