John W. "Peanut" Harrell, Sr. died Sunday, May 18, 2014. A lifelong Hampton Roads resident, he retired as a welder in 2006 from the Dominion Surry Nuclear Power Plant after 29 years of service. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, sports, especially football, NASCAR, and vegetable gardening. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Lee and Geneva Harrell; two brothers, William and Arthur Lee Harrell, Jr.; a son, John Walter Harrell, Jr.; and a grandson, John Raymond Lenz, Jr. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Angelina R. Harrell; three children and their spouses, Nancy and Ricky Farrell, Denise and William McCue, and Jimmy and Melinda Harrell; five siblings and their spouses, Jack and Christine Harrell, Shirley VanGeison, Elizabeth Emory, Robert and Kathy Harrell, Geneva and Joe Rushworth; five grandchildren, Amanda Bailey, Heather Holloman and her husband, Jason, James Walter Harrell, Molly Farrell, and Kaitlyn McCue; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah Holloman. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Thursday, May 22, 2014 in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel by his brothers, Robert and Jack Harrell and Rev. Jeff Smith. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
