Obituary

John Pressley Hargett (69), loving husband, father, brother and friend, passed away on August 19th, 2023, at Riverside Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Hampton on December 31, 1953, to parents Garren and Diantha Hargett. He always referred to himself as a New Year's Eve tax deduction child which was a running joke with his dad.

John attended Hampton High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach, VA.  He worked as a Graphic Designer throughout his professional career.  Early on, he opened his own business called Corporate Design which was in the historic Strawberry Banks Manor House (Roseland Manor) in Phoebus, VA.  Unfortunately, John lost everything when a fire destroyed the building a few years later.  He went on to work for several different graphics/printing firms over the years including Breeger Media where he was still employed at his passing.

John had a passion for baseball from the time he played Little League as a boy.  As we were blessed with a daughter instead of a son, he taught her to play from an early age. After the T-Ball years, John helped with the startup of a girls' softball league at Wythe and volunteered to coach.  John truly loved the many years he devoted to coaching the girls for Wythe Little League.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Pamela Reynolds and Raye Hargett.  He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carole Hargett; his daughter, Diantha Nicole Silva and husband Joseph Silva; his sister, Gina Hargett-Freed and husband Michael Freed; sister-in-law, Judy Strickland and husband John Strickland; brother-in-law Michael Crawford; sister-in-law, Becky Betz; niece, Wendy Stork and husband Kenny and their daughters Meagan and Marina; nephew, Jay Strickland and wife Kristi and their children Cole, Brock and Ally; nephew, Jeff Strickland and wife Stephanie and their sons Carson and Knox; great nephew, Skyler Crawford and wife Beth and their daughter Maicey.

At John's request, there will be no funeral service.  He requested that his ashes be scattered at the beach in Hatteras where he loved to surf.
