John C. Greene, Jr., 73, passed away on September 29, 2023.

With uncommon optimism, good humor, and a relentless determination, John lived a full life dedicated to his family and especially his wife of 50 years, Rosie.

John taught health/P.E. in Hampton City Schools, including at Tyler Elementary, Eaton Middle, and Kecoughtan High. He coached baseball at Kecoughtan for thirty years, and played in several local bands. John coached youth sports for many years, and served as President of the Phillips Athletic Association.

Survivors include three children: Kevin (Becky), David (Caitlin), and Allison Covey (Jason); six grandchildren, Jacob, Brady, Dawson, Anna, Grace, and Paige; two sisters Marion Kelly (John) and Carolyn Lawrence; and several nieces and nephews.

The family is grateful for his longtime team of caring doctors, and the gift of a kidney donation.

The family will receive friends at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Thursday, October 5, 2023 from 6-7:30PM. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Friday, October 6, at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a donation to the American Diabetes Association.
