Obituary

John Carroll "Jack" Pope passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024, at the age of 79. Jack was born July 4, 1945, in Newport News, VA.

He was preceded in death by his father Carroll Linwood Pope and wife, Nancy, mother Betty G. Pope and nephew, Howard Talley "Tal" Cook, Jr.

Jack proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a lifetime member of Hampton Volunteer Fire Company with over sixty years of service and was currently serving as Treasurer. He worked for the City of Hampton Fire Department for thirty years and attained the rank of Captain. He received an Associate of Arts Degree in Fire Science from Thomas Nelson Community College. He was a member of many different organizations, which included the Hampton Yacht Club where he served as Commodore, Hampton Rotary, former past president, The Downtown Hampton Development Partnership, Chairman of the Waterfront Committee, City of Hampton Board of Zoning Appeals, Hampton Bay Days, and the Hampton History Museum Board. He was a very active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he served as an usher and all around Mr. Fix-It man. He loved spending time with his family and friends, boating, and volunteering in his community.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Cook "Bettyrene" Pope, brother, Charles Thomas Pope (Jeanette), brother-in-law, Howard Talley Cook (Dianne), niece, Amy Driscoll (Kenny), nephew, James "Jay" Cook (Julia), great niece, Courtney Thompson (Mike), great niece, Tiffany Gregerson (Eric), great nephew, Richard "Bodie" Driscoll, great nieces, Jadyn and Kalia Cook.  There are several other "nieces and nephews" who considered Jack "their Uncle"; and he is survived by numerous cousins.

Jack was a person loved by many for his personality, kindness, willingness to help others, and a positive outlook on things.  He endeared himself to many by the way he lived his life and will always be remembered for his sneaky smile. Many referred to him as the "Unofficial Mayor of Hampton".

A service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 100 West Queensway, Hampton, VA 23669 on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Fire Department rites. A reception will be held at the Hampton Yacht Club, 4707 Victoria Boulevard, Hampton, VA 23669. The family requests that everyone wear "LOUD'' clothes in Jack's honor.
