John Ernest "Jack" Boerner passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2018. Born March 20, 1930 in Newport News to William F. and Ruby R. Boerner, he
moved to Hampton at age 8 and lived the remainder of his life in Olde Wythe,
He graduated Hampton High School in January 1949, attended VPI/Wm & Mary in Norfolk & VPI in Blacksburg, VA. Jack was a true Southern Gentleman and a proud Marine who served in Korea & as a member of the 1953 Nevada Atomic Testing Group. He worked for NNSD until 1976 when he formed his own company, "East Landing Design" and contracted to Phillip Morris, Richmond, Surry Nuclear Plant and Allied Signal, Chesterfield. He was active with his children's activities and served as Committee Chairman of Cub Pack 320, and was a member of the George Wythe Recreations Assoc. where he was Starter for their swim meets for several years.
He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council. He was also previously a member of Trinity and Aldersgate Methodist Churches.
Jack enjoyed swimming, boating, camping and spending time with his family. He always loved the water and bought his first boat when he was 10 years old. He considered Hampton Roads his play ground, swimming and boating. He loved having dinner and fishing on the water after a long day's work.
He extended his love of boating and swimming to his children, grandchildren and even his great-grandchildren. Many of the younger ones learned to swim in his pool and to fish off of his boat. He was an adventurous child, swinging from and camping under the Live Oaks in what is now Merrimac Shores and running away with the Circus. He also loved to dance, Ballroom, Square and Line Dancing.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Wm F. Jr (Bill) and Robert (Bob) Boerner.
Leaving to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Mary Caroline Welch Boerner; children, Michele Hilde of Hampton, Michael W (Johnna) of Waynesville, MO, Cheryl Anne Brewer (David) of Canandaigua, NY and Sean H (Melinda) of Chester, VA; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and in-law, Carol Moss.
The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 AM Friday, December 21, 2018, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 11:00 am, celebrated by Rev. Msgr. R. Francis Muench. Inurnment with military honors will be at Parklawn Memorial Park at 2:30 pm.
In lieu of Flowers the family would like donations be made in his memory to St. Jude's Children Research Center or a favorite charity.
