John Edward Benton, 64, of Hampton VA, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends on January 5th, 2025. Born in Hopewell VA, son of Lester and Catherine Benton.

After a long battle with cancer, John made the decision to stop treatments. He felt the quality of his life was gone and faced his demise with faith, courage and support of family and friends.

John grew up in Hampton and graduated from Kecoughtan High School in 1979. He joined the U.S. Army and was awarded the Army Service Ribbon, Expert Riffle and Expert Grenade Badge.

He worked for over 40 years as a welder and pipefitter specializing in the shipbuilding industry.

John enjoyed fishing, watching classic monster movies, listening to music, hanging out with his friends and watching Football. His bucket list was to go to a Washington Commanders football game. His wish came true on December 21st, with his best friend Amy. John's absence will be deeply felt by many, but he would want everyone to remember the good times and enjoy life.

The family wants to thank Dr. Kruger and his team at the Virginia Oncology Associates for their care and compassion and are grateful to Father Romeo Jazmin, for providing Last Rites, which gave everyone much comfort.  We also want to thank "Wings over Virginia" hospice team for assisting John with transitioning over the rainbow. Most of all, we want to thank God for giving us John for 64 years! God blessed us beyond belief and our faith held us up during this difficult time.

Preceded in death by his parents; he leaves to cherish his memory, brother, Lester Paul Benton and wife Candy of Hampton and sister, Margaret Benton-Jones and husband Robert of Yorktown.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1:00 PM on January 16, 2025, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Yorktown by Rev. Mike Joly and Deacon Dan Johnson; followed by a reception at the home of his sister, Margaret Benton-Jones, 106 Tiger Run Yorktown VA, 23693. All are welcome.
