Joan Spear
Spunzo

Joan Spear Spunzo, 81, died March 19, 2021, at the Chamberlin with her family by her side. Born in Portsmouth, Virginia on December 28, 1939, to Doris Parker Spear and Robert Lee Spear, she attended Portsmouth Schools, graduating from Cradock High School in 1958 and then attended Radford College, University of Maryland and University of Idaho.
Joan married Raymond A. Spunzo on December 18, 1960. Their first child, Monica Spear, was born March 19, 1964, at Fort Benning, Georgia and their second child, Raymond Anthony Jr. (Tony), was born May 18, 1969, at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Most important to Joan were her children and husband, family was her primary focus. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Raymond; daughter, Monica Brown; son Tony Spunzo; and grandchildren, Megan Brown and Tyler Brown.
Having commercial interests in floral design and customer service, she worked in Busch Gardens German Gift Shop, LAFB floral shop, Willow Oaks floral shop and Hampton Visitors Center. Her social activities centered on Willow Oaks Garden Club, several neighborhood Bridge clubs and the Peninsula Bridge Center. She was committed to her church and the Bible Study Fellowship, where she led study groups.
A service will be held at First United Methodist Church Fox Hill on Monday, March 29, 2021. Visitation begins at 1:00 PM, with service at 2:00 PM. The service may be viewed on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/firstumcfoxhill/ or livestreaming at: https://subspla.sh/r3nvrqt . A private graveside service will follow for the family.
The family would like to thank the Interim Health Care aides and nurses for their superb care.
In lieu of flowers, Joan would be honored to have donations made to First United Methodist Church Fox Hill or Community Presbyterian Church.
