Joan Goodson Irick, age 88 of Hampton, passed away Saturday, December 17, 2022. Born on February 18, 1934, in McDowell County, West Virginia, she was the daughter of Walter Thomas Goodson and Gladys Welch Goodson. She had eight brothers and sisters. Joan graduated from Welch High School in 1952 and moved to Hampton in 1962. She was a very dedicated mother and devoted her life to raising her children and caring for her family. She worked in Food and Nutrition Services for Hampton City Schools for many years, retiring as a Manager/Trainer. She often enjoyed telling stories about her days working at the schools and made lifelong friendships throughout her career. Joan was known as "Granny" to many due to her snow-white hair. She enjoyed gardening, puzzles, and going shopping with her best friends Addie and Gloria. She loved spending time with her family, and they adored her; she will truly be missed. She also was a regular supporter of many causes including various organizations supporting children with needs and those benefiting wounded veterans.
Preceded in death by her parents; Joan is survived by her son, Stephen Irick, Jr. and his wife Paola; daughters, Belinda Evans and Kim Price; grandchildren, Jacob Evans and his husband, Kris; Brandon Evans and his wife, Allison, Liam Irick, and Mila Irick; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA with the Reverend Jim Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton. Friends are invited to join the family for a reception after the graveside at Hampton Baptist Church, 40 Kings Way, Hampton.
