Joan A. Buhler, 84, died Saturday, March 20, 2021. Born September 28, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the oldest of four girls born to Rose and Francis Paul Mellucci. She attended parochial schools and graduated from Bishop McDonald Memorial High School. She went to work as a receptionist for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and it is there that she met the love of her life, a young Army soldier named Robert William Buhler. They had a long-distance courtship while he was stationed at Ft. Eustis. They married on February 22, 1958 at St. Francis deSales Catholic Church in Brooklyn and the very next day she moved to Hampton where she has remained for the rest of her life.
She retired from Hampton Social Services in 1996 after 25 years of service. She was a devout Catholic and faithful member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church for over 50 years. She was also a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Secular Franciscan Order in Williamsburg. Joan knew no stranger, she was a friend to all.
A very devoted wife and mother, she will be missed dearly by her children, Valerie Hall (Gary), Joann Brand, Timothy Buhler (Lynn), and Kevin Buhler (Sherry); seven grandchildren, Tony Brand (Rachel), Joshua Hall (Sara), Elisha Buhler, Jessica Buhler (Kevin), Crystal Bailey (Skyler), Kristin McDaniel (Chris), and Erin Buhler; two great-grandchildren, Averill and Willoughby Bailey; two sisters, Ann Mellucci and Elaine Saisa; and numerous friends she considered family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert William Buhler; her sister, Kathleen Jones; and an infant son, Dennis William Buhler.
