Jerry Herbert Dezern 98, passed from this life to an eternity with Jesus on January 27, 2020. Jerry was born October 7, 1921 in Surry Co, NC. He was preceded in death by his dad, Steve E. "Gomery" and mom Lillie K. Dezern; sister, Virginia; 3 brothers, Romie, Calvin and Ray; and daughter-in-law, Joyce.

Jerry leaves to cherish his precious memory, his wife of 74 years, Irene; two sons, Roy Eugene Sr. and Ronald Lee (Sherrie); five grandchildren, Gene Jr., Carrie, Jennifer, Valerie and David; 10 great-grandchildren and the 11 ^th on the way. He is also survived by one nephew and many nieces; also a lot of very close friends and long time neighbors. He had many Christian families he loved in the church where he served as a deacon for many years.

Jerry retired in 1983 from Coats and Clark Zipper Factory where he worked for 34 years. He then worked at Smith Floragift and enjoyed his time working with Virgil Winslow building decorations for shipyard parties in Williamsburg.

In later years, Jerry spent many days at East Hampton Baptist Church doing anything that needed to be done. He took care of the yard and surrounding area, mowing, edging, weed eating, etc. He continued to work until it became too difficult to load equipment. Jerry developed ataxia which attacked his motor skills, his speech, his balance and his ability to walk. He got around in the house in a power chair for at least 22 years. He always had a smile, was in very good spirit and had a happy heart until the end of his life.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Victory Baptist Church, Hampton at 12 Noon with interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at church from 11 AM – 12.
