Obituary

Jerry Chester Aycock, 78, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026, in his home in Hampton, Virginia, after a life well lived and devoted to his family, faith, and community.

Jerry was born on December 24, 1947, in Princeton, North Carolina, and later graduated from Newport News High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, a commitment that reflected his lifelong sense of duty, integrity, and service to others.

Following his military service, Jerry built a long and respected career as a Central Office Network Technician with Verizon formally known as Bell Atlantic, where he worked for 31 years. Known for his intelligence and curiosity, he had a deep passion for technology and home automation, always eager to learn, tinker, and help others understand the latest innovations.

Jerry was also an amateur ham radio operator, proudly known by the call sign WA4OHX, and he enjoyed connecting with others through this lifelong hobby.

Beyond his professional life, Jerry was deeply involved in his community. He was a former host and contributor to Sportsman Magazine, where he authored an article titled "Hooked on Hampton." An avid outdoorsman and passionate fisherman, Jerry was actively involved in local fishing organizations and clubs, where his enthusiasm for the sport and camaraderie left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

He was also dedicated to serving his community and church. Jerry attended Liberty Baptist in Hampton and was involved with the City of Hampton, including a leadership role as an event chair for Bay Days.

Above all else, Jerry was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Karen Aycock, whom he cared for with unwavering devotion. He was a proud and loving father to Dawn Tatum (Cody), James Aycock, and Keatha Lucy (Joe).

Jerry was a cherished grandfather to Bel, Kiersten, Shea, Jadyn, Chance Galofaro (Zoe), Kennady Thomas (Eric), Hannah, and Noah. He was also a joyful great-grandfather to Austin and Chloe.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Pollard, his brother, Bennett Aycock, and his father Marvin Aycock.

Jerry had a gift for connecting with people. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and make them feel instantly welcome. Known as the king of dad jokes, he kept those around him laughing and smiling, even on the hardest days. If you met Jerry, you didn't just meet a kind man—you left with a new friend.

Jerry's die-hard passion for The Dallas Cowboys, fishing, his love of technology, dedication to his faith and community, and deep care for his family defined the life he lived. His legacy is one of warmth, generosity, laughter, and love, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
