Thomas Foughner, Jr.
December 25, 1936 – January 12, 2022
Jerome Thomas Foughner, Jr. was born on December 25, 1936 in Savannah, GA. He died on January 12, 2022. Tom was a 1954 graduate of Benedictine Military School in Savannah, a class that remained close and continues to gather. He was a 1956 graduate of Armstrong Junior College and a 1958 graduate of the University of Georgia.
After graduation, Tom moved to Hampton to work at NACA. He worked as an aerospace engineer for the next forty years, retiring from NASA in 1998. He was very proud of the NACA wings he was presented at his retirement. Tom was a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics serving in many board positions in the local chapter.
Tom was a founding member of the Peninsula Catholic Adult Club where he met his loving wife and made life-long friends. He was a founding member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he served in many ministries over the years including Finance Council, Parish Council, Religious Education teacher, Lector, Lay Eucharistic Minister, Happy Wanderers and Young at Heart. He also served a term on the Diocesan Pastoral Council. Tom was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #16226. He served as a member of the Seton Manor Board in Hampton from 1996-2020. He served on the Burbank Elementary PTA board as treasurer and President while his children were students there. Tom was a Band Booster for the Hampton High School band from 1989-1997, chaperoning many events. He volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 29. As a retiree, he volunteered at the Air Power Park in Hampton and was active with the NASA-Langley Alumni Association.
Music in all its forms was a big part of Tom's life. He was a storyteller who loved a good party, parades, and dancing. Tom never met a stranger. He enjoyed trips to the beach and spending time with family.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife Charlene Watkins Foughner. They embraced life together with laughter and love the past 52 years. He is also survived by his children Margaret Griffon (Ben) of Henrico, Angela Sorce (Brian) of Chesapeake, Thomas Foughner of Herndon, and Sara Bernhardt (Gerry) of Midlothian, and his grandchildren Ella, Daniel, and Charlotte Griffon, and Rebecca and Samantha Sorce. A fifth granddaughter is expected this spring. Tom is also survived by his in-laws Alice Foughner, Bob and Toni McDonald, Chuck and Paula Watkins, Rosalie and Bob Dalton, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Margaret B. Foughner, his brother James Foughner, his father and mother-in-law, Arthur and Rosalie Watkins, and his in-laws Sarajane McDonald, Jeffery Watkins, and Joseph and Petrina Watkins.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 28 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Hampton with internment following at Parklawn Memorial Park. Family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m. at the church.
