Jeanne Thompson Bachmann, an educator and world traveler who proudly served in the Women's Army Corps in World War II and active proponent in the Civil Rights Movement passed into eternal life on December 31st, 2017 at the age of 96.
Born in Cradock, Va., Jeanne was the valedictorian of her class at the age of 15 prior to pursuing a degree in the field of medicine. Her matriculation was interrupted as she joined the efforts in World War II, where she proudly served as a First Lieutenant in the Women's Army Corps (WAC). It was in this venue she met and married her husband, Henry S. Bachmann, who preceded her in death.
After the passing of her husband, Jeanne was employed by Norfolk Public Schools as an English teacher ( Norview, Booker T. Washington and Granby high schools) as well as Reading Coordinator for Secondary Schools.
She is survived by a son John Bachmann (Vicki), daughters Valerie Hixon (Bill) and Tina White (John), granddaughters Holly Hixon, Heather Westheimer (Josh), Jenna Schultz (Jeffrey) and three greatgrandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the Hidenwood Retirement Community and Grace Hospice for their faithful support.
The family will receive friends from 4-5:15 PM Wednesday, January 3, 2017 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church. Immediately following at 5:30, a Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Joe Goldsmith. Due to the weather, interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church Social Ministry, 100 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, VA 23601.
