Jeanine B. Hughes, 84, died Tuesday, October 26, 2021. Born in Georgia, she was a longtime Hampton resident where she graduated from Hampton High School in 1954. She graduated with an associate degree from Mars Hill College, married, had children, and returned to school to get her BA from ODU. She taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade at Francis Asbury, Robert E. Lee and Barron Elementary Schools. Jeanine was a very active member of Hampton Roads Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was also a dedicated participant of Operation Christmas Child's Shoebox Ministry and searched all year for special deals on Amazon and at the Dollar Store to be able to fill boxes for children in need.

Jeanine loved her family and her face lit up anytime she was around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When asked which was her favorite she would reply "the one who is in the room".

Preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Elsie Benton and her brother, Kenneth Benton; survivors include her husband of 65 years, Reggie Hughes; three children, Thomas Hughes (Anne), Timothy Hughes (Ressie), and Carolyn Sawyer (Tom); ten grandchildren, Ava Nicole Hughes, Thomas Paul Sawyer, Jr. (Vanessa), Olivia Sawyer, Brittany Terry (Josh), Allison Lockhart (Chris), Eleanor Sawyer, Melissa Hughes, Hannah Hughes, Joey Hughes, and Abigail Rodriguez (Lazaro); four great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons with another one on the way; and her sister-in-law, Jean Benton.

The family will receive friends from 10-11am Monday, November 1, 2021, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home with a funeral service beginning at 11:00. The service may be viewed live by clicking HERE .  Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
