Jean Windsor Greenwell, 83, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014. Born in Washington DC, she has been a resident of Hampton for over 50 years. She was formerly of Leonardtown, MD where she was a 1948 graduate of St. Mary's Academy.
Jean worked as a receptionist at Ft. Eustis in the 1960's. There, she was awarded an Outstanding Employment Rating. She was mainly known for her work as Deputy Clerk of Hampton Circuit Court where she retired in 1991.
Jean was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Hampton Women's Club.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Andrew D. Greenwell; daughters and their spouses, Karen and Carl Voglewede, Carol Hardy, Ann and John Malarkey, Cathy and Ben Medders, Helen and Steve Mallon, and Beth Cumbo and her fiance Lance Heater; twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Our mom was a devoted wife and loving mother whose life centered on her family. Mom will always be remembered with a smile on her face, giving words of encouragement and taking the time to listen. Our mother was the embodiment of what it means to be a true lady. She will be missed.
The family will receive friends from 1-3:00 PM Sunday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in downtown Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial at St Joseph Church will be celebrated 11:00 AM Monday, April 14 th , 2014 by Rev. Msgr. Walter C. Barrett. There will be a gathering of friends and family immediately following at Cordier Hall. Interment will be in Our Lady's Church at Medley's Neck Cemetery in Leonardtown, MD at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 15 th , 2014. A celebration of life will follow at 3 PM at Olde Breton Inn.
The family wishes expressions of sympathy to take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979 or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Souther and his staff and the loving care of the staff at the Hidenwood Retirement Community.
