Jay Howard Williams, 85, died Monday, June 29, 2015. Born in Cherryville, NC he had been a Hampton resident since 1950. Howard retired from the Air Force in 1967 after 20 years of service, having served in the Vietnam War as well as being stationed in Panama, Guam, Korea and Japan. After his military service he had worked in accounting for many years. He was a member of Wallace Memorial United Methodist Church and had taught Sunday School and been a member of the choir. Howard loved to paint, golf and knit as well as telling jokes and stories. He had also played fast pitch softball for Langley Air Force Base and Foxhill. Howard is survived by his "bride" of 63 years, Shirley P. Williams; children, Ann Arbogast (Jerry), Dan Williams (Leslie), Nancy Williams, and Mark Williams (Sandy); brother, Bud Williams (Betty); brother in law, Bill Pfeifer (Irene); grandchildren, Adam, Kelly, Zach (Tina), Sara (Derek), Nick, Shannon; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 PM, Thursday, July 2, 2015 at Wallace Memorial United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Clark Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5-7 PM at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials be sent to Wallace Memorial United Methodist Church or the Clark Cemetery Association.
