Janice Broughton Topping, 75, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2026. A lifelong resident of Hampton, she was the beloved daughter of the late Wilma and Clyde Becton Broughton, Jr.
Janice dedicated many years of service as an Administrative Assistant with Microserve. She was a charter member of Northampton Presbyterian Church, where she faithfully taught Sunday School and helped shape the lives of many children until the church’s closing. When her health permitted, she later attended Bethany Methodist Church.
Above all, Janice’s greatest joy and purpose in life was her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a proud grandmother who cherished every moment spent with her children and grandsons. Her kindness, strength, and steady presence were the foundation of her family. She was deeply committed to her community, volunteering for many years with the Kraft Elementary School PTA, as well as with Northampton Little League and the Northampton Volunteer Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Amanda Gail Topping; and her brother, Clyde Becton Broughton, III.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband, John David Topping, Sr.; her sons, John Topping, Jr. and his wife Joy, and Craig Topping and his wife Christine; her cherished grandsons, Becton Topping, John Clayton “Clay” Topping, and Connor Woodcock; her brother, Charles “Scott” Broughton; her brother-in-law, Bill Topping; her sisters-in-law, Frances Page and her husband Phillip, and Mary Bess Klein and her husband Henry; and her nieces, Kim Page-Slack, Tracy Page, Michelle Caamano, and Karin Clevenger.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 4, 2026, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home. Inurnment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Riverside Hospice Care Peninsula, 856 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Suite C, Newport News, VA 23601, or to the Hampton Fire and EMS Education Foundation, P.O. Box 414, Hampton, VA 23669.
