March 4, 1931 – January 18, 2022
Janice Lee Shockley passed away on January 18, 2022, at Elite Elder Care in Newport News, VA, her home for the last eight years, just short of her 91 st birthday. Janice was cared for with the utmost respect by their staff. Thank you Toni, for everything you and your staff provided Janice.
Janice was born on March 4, 1931 to Kenneth G. and Emma M. Shockley. She was preceded in death by all her siblings, Elwood Shockley, Carlton Shockley, Aubrey Shockley, Roland Shockley, Doris Stanton and Mildred Wainwright. She is survived by nieces, nephews and a host of close friends, especially Judy Crehan. Janice was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church for many years until its closure.
As a member of the class 1949 of Hampton High School she was the first woman percussionist in Virginia awarded a scholarship for her achievements. She continued her education at the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music earning a Bachelors Degree of Music Education in May 1954. She later earned a Masters Degree of Arts Education in June 1964 from East Carolina College. Janice's career of teaching in Newport News for 30 plus years culminated at Denbigh High School as their Band Director, where she was recognized with many awards that she cherished through her life.
