Janice Pigford Chalmers, 83, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 10, 2015. Jan was born in Willard, NC, one of nine children born to the late Susan and Kenneth Pigford. She had been a Peninsula resident since 1953. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Charles Chalmers of Hampton, VA, her son Cameron Chalmers (Wanda) of Blacksburg, VA, a daughter Christy Adams (Butch) of Poquoson, VA, four grandchildren, Annie Chalmers of Asheville, NC, Charlie Chalmers (Natalie) of Atlanta, GA, Kyle Adams (Kelly) of Richmond, VA, Casey Brame (Matt) of Poquoson, VA, brothers Donald Pigford of Farmington, NM, Ray Pigford (Elaine) of Montross, CO, Armenius Pigford (Phyllis) of Willard, NC, and her sister Christine Day of McMurray, PA. Successful in all endeavors in life, Jan retired as Director of Surgical Services from Mary Immaculate hospital in 1995. Her most important job, and the joy of her life, was as beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother,sister, and friend to all those who knew her. Jan was the foundation of her and Charlie's family and will be missed dearly. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM on Monday, April 13th at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA. A service celebrating her life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 514 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA on April 14th at 2:00 PM. A private graveside service for the family will be held prior to the church service. The family will receive friends in the church social hall immediately following the service.
