Janetta T. "Jan" Owens, 81, widow of Francis "Frank" Owens, died Wednesday, April 18, 2018. Born in Logan Co, WV, she had been a Peninsula resident since 1963 where she was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Jan, with her husband, founded the Tidewater Area Darting Assoc.(TADA) and was women's champion for many years. She worked 20 years at Hampton University until retiring there as secretary to the Dean of Men and then worked until retiring from the Hampton Sheriff's Department.

Jan is survived by her sons, Stephen R. Aldridge and wife Lori, and Frank A. Owens and wife Sandra; step-daughter, Frances Zeock; sisters, Earnestine Toney and Carol Horn; brother, James Toney; eight grandchildren, Stephen Gaborick, Pam Burnham, James Owens, Tim Shimmin, Bethany Vick, Nick Aldridge, Allison Owens, Zac Aldridge, Justin Nolan, Jennifer Nolan and Brittany Vailati; and two great-grandchildren, Jasper Gaborick and Naya Gaborick.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 am, Monday, April 23, 2018 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave by Pastor Joe Hunt with interment to follow in Hampton National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5-7 pm at the funeral home.
