Janet Sawyer Peters, 90, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2022, after a brief illness. Janet was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey on December 12, 1931, to Allen and Augusta McGowan. After graduating from Roselle High School in 1949, she came to Williamsburg to attend the College of William and Mary. There she met her first husband, James B. Sawyer Jr. After graduating in 1953, she and Jay married and eventually moved to Hampton to raise their four children. They lived on Columbia Ave until Jay's death in 1983. In 1986, Janet married R. Marshall Peters. She moved to his home on Bridge Street and lived there until moving to an assisted living community in Yorktown in 2021.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents and both husbands. She is survived by her children, Jay Sawyer and wife Karen of Virginia Beach, Mary Ellen Sawyer of Hampton, David Sawyer and wife Tina of Castle Rock, Colorado, Elizabeth Hargrove and husband James of Pensacola, Florida, Malory Spencer and husband Kenny of Williamsburg, and Richard M. Peters and wife Giselle of Fairfax. Janet is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral will be held at 11:00 on Friday, September 16, 2022, at St. John's Church, Hampton. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Burial will be private. Memorials may be made to St. John's Charitable Trust or the College of William and Mary.
