James Edward Vines, also affectionately known as "Big Jim" or "Da", 73, died Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Born in Newport News, he was a lifelong Peninsula resident and retired from the Amoco Oil Refinery as a Process Operator in 2010 after 27 years of service.

A great friend to all, Jim was very loved. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf and any sport UVA was playing. Jim served as Union President of the Local OCAW. He was an avid poker and video poker player and through the years had made 85 trips to Las Vegas, his favorite travel destination.

Preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Geraldine Vines; Jim is survived by his wife, Kathy Vines; two daughters, Jenny Barthlome and husband, Kerry and Natalie Martineau and husband, Kristopher; two grandchildren, Joshua Barthlome and wife, Holly, and Sierra Adams, and husband, Isaiah; a great-grandson, Liam James Adams; a sister, Carol Moore; a brother, Gerald Vines; a sister-in-law, Michele Rudolph and husband, Tom; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; and his little dog, Chloe. Jim is also survived by many friends who he considered family.

The family would like to thank Riverside Regional Medical Center and Riverside Rehab for the love and care shown to Jim during his illness.
