James Oliver Vannice passed away peacefully on April 8, 2017. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 1, 1939, he was the son of the late Mary Louise and Lawrence (Bud) Vannice. Also preceding him in death were his sister, Martha, and his brother, Robert.
Jim attended elementary school in Danville, Indiana, high school in New Winchester, Indiana, and graduated in 1962, from Purdue University, with a degree in Civil Engineering.
After nearly thirty years of service, he retired from Tidewater Construction Corporation, Skanska, as an estimator.
He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society of Professional Estimators, and enjoyed over ten years as the Commissioner of the Mallory Youth Basketball Association.
A dedicated animal lover, he always treasured the companionship of his pets, especially his dogs.
A devoted husband and father, he leaves his wife, Anne, his children, Kathryn Crocker, and her husband, Jimmy; Matthew and his wife, Lori; Mark and his wife, Karen; and step children, Sheri Harris and husband, Russell; and James Green. He also had 8 grandchildren; Amanda (Travis), Ellen (Steven), Eric, Michael, Nick, Tyler, Haley, and Kylie, and two great grandchildren, Brooke-Lynn and Maggie. He is survived by his sister, Kathryn Wiebusch and her husband, Harold; brothers, Jack Vannice and his wife, Ann, Thad Vannice, William Vannice, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, April 14, 2017 at 10:30 am, with a memorial service following at 11:15 am at Hampton Christian Church, 151 East Mercury Boulevard, Hampton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), 523 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., NN, 23601, or a charity of your choice.
