James Monroe (Jack) Neel, Jr. 85, entered into eternal life on August 20, 2023.  He was born January 1, 1938, in the old Dixie Hospital, Hampton, VA to the late James M. Neel, Sr. and Evelyn Brown Neel Mathews.  He had been a resident of Hampton for 73 years until relocating to Smithfield, VA in 2011.

Jack attended Hampton High School, graduating in 1957.  After graduation he went to work for C&P Telephone Co. of Virginia which became Bell Atlantic and later Verizon, retiring after 40 years of service.  He was a member of Pioneers of America; Communication Workers of America; Past Exalted Ruler and Life Member of Hampton Elks #366; Life Member of William J. McMahon Masonic Lodge #303; and a long-time member of Warwick Moose Lodge #1711.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Dixie Lee Farmer Neel; and son, Stephen D. Neel, Sr.  He is survived by his son, James M. (Jay) Neel, II of Hampton; devoted sister-in-law, Frances F. Pride, of Smithfield; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Friday, August 25, 2023 in the mausoleum at Parklawn Memorial Park, 2551 N. Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately prior to the service.
