Obituary

On Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, James Lewis, 50, peacefully passed away at home. A native of Pinellas, FL, he was born on Aug. 30, 1966, and was the son of the late David Lewis, Sr. and Adrianna Lewis. He joined the Navy in 1986 and had considered Hampton and Norfolk home since 1989.

James never met a stranger and anybody he met became his extended family. With his booming voice, lip-syncing performances and creativity, he liked bringing joy to everyone. He expanded his creativity when he became a Floral Designer with Smith Floragift, receiving his training through his mentor, Virgil Winslow. James never allowed his progressing hip complications to become an obstacle in helping others as he began volunteering with The Breakthrough Center, which ultimately led him to renew his faith at his church.

James leaves behind his closest and loyal four-legged companion and "kid", Bethany who never left his side; his "adopted" brothers, Marc Benshetler and Patrick Everett, step-mother, Helen Beveridge; siblings, David Jr., Lindy, Michele, Daniel, Mark (Ashley); numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017 at Calvary Assembly of God.

Memorial Donations may be made to The Breakthrough Center or a local animal shelter.

Arrangements by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
