James Byron Jarden (Jim), 75, of Hampton, Virginia, peacefully passed away on June 14, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Debbie, and their children, John (Tonya), Jim (Leslie), Doug (Jessica), Jennifer Johnson (Jordan), and Kelly Wood (Justin). They have 14 grandchildren, all dearly loved by Jim. He is also survived by his sister, Holly Phillips (Randy) and many nieces and nephews. Jim never missed an opportunity to share stories about his family.
Jim was a career police officer for the City of Hampton, serving in many capacities including, Investigations and the SWAT team. He committed 30 years to the public safety of his community and to teaching, mentoring, and coaching many officers who value his wisdom and integrity to this day. He wore his uniform and badge with honor as a symbol of his moral ethics, compassion, and humility. He was known to be tough, with a side of humor, but always professional, desiring young officers to succeed on the job, in life, and above all else, to maintain their credibility. Jim cared deeply for the officers who worked under his leadership, even welcoming them into his home where his family hosted many holiday meals. After his retirement from the police department, Jim continued to serve his community and started his business, Tidewater Deck and Fence. He was a very skilled craftsman and took great pride in his work.
Mostly, Jim was a great man of faith who loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He loved to share the testimony of God’s redeeming love and how Jesus saved his life.
Join us for a celebration of Jim’s life at All Generations Church, 28 Harpersville Road, Newport News on Monday, June 22, 2026 at 11:00 am.
