James Edward Gedville, HM1(SW), USN (Ret.), 74, of Hampton, passed away on October 3, 2026.

A native of Illinois, he served 20 years in the United States Navy, retiring in November 1989 as a Hospital Corpsman First Class (Surface Warfare). Following his military service, he enjoyed several careers, including work at the Gateway Plant and, his favorite, driving a Hampton City Schools bus, where he loved taking his "littles" to school each day. James loved animals and photography and gave generously of his time to others. He volunteered with several organizations, including the American Red Cross, and served the Boy Scouts of America as Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 31.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Sharon; his daughter, Laura, and her wife, Kat; his son, John, and his wife, Trulee; his daughter-in-law, Kadi Lobos; and his six grandchildren, Anthony, Amber, Elizabeth, Colton, Caleb, and Cameron.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest son, Joseph.

A memorial service will be held at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 1 p.m. A private family interment with full military honors will follow on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
