IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James
Gatling
August 31, 1946 – January 6, 2025
James Randolph Gatling, beloved father, husband, and friend, passed away peacefully on Jan 6th 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication. Born on August 31, 1946, James served in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1971 during the Vietnam War, embodying the values of courage and service.
James is survived by his three siblings, Dorthy Russell, Cathy Worley, and Richard Gatling. He is survived by his only daughter, Erin Gatling, her husband Casey Schilling, and their two children, Gunner Gatling Schilling and Paige Stella Schilling. He also leaves behind his stepson, James Thomas Mowbray, his wife Victoria Mowbray, and their son Parker Mowbray.
Following his military service, James pursued his passion for aviation and mechanics, obtaining his machinist license from the College of the Albemarle in the early 1970s. He worked alongside his close family friend, John Bray, building racecar engines, including those for the legendary Ricky Rudd during his rookie season.
It was through pilot lessons in the late 70s that James met his beloved wife, Susan Giles Gatling, who predeceased him in February 2023. Together, they created a loving home for their family. James's love for flying led him to become a full-time pilot for the Falk family for over 30 years, allowing him to remain involved in the racing community he cherished. He continued in this role until 2009 when he devoted his time to caring for his wife, Susan, during her illness.
James was known for his endless stories, vast knowledge of race cars and planes, unwavering support, and boundless love for his family. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all whose lives he touched. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday October 26th at 2pm inside of Willoughby Fish House restaurant, at Willoughby Marina (food and drinks provided).
