James Robert Brackins, 93, died Sunday, June 15, 2014. Born in Camden Co., TN, he served in the US Army and then came to Hampton working first as a carpenter, building houses around the area and then working at Fort Eustis in civil service retiring there in 1984. Mr. Brackins was a loving father and grandfather, was called Granddaddy by many and was well known always wearing his cowboy hat and boots. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Adair Mabel Brackins; daughter, Roberta Jones; four sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Brackins of Maryland; daughter, Vivian Coffey; son, Paul Brackins; sister, Essie Melton; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his nephew with who he lived and who cared for him, Tony Espineira and Danielle Sproul. The family would like to thank the ICU at Riverside Regional Medical Center and his "Tennessee partner in crime" Ron Minton for their loving care and support. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Thursday, June 19, 2014 at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home with interment to follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
