IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jack E.
Lundy
January 4, 1943 – October 24, 2024
Jack Eugene Lundy, 81, LTC, US Army (Retired), a resident of the Peninsula since 1987 and Hampton since 1991, died on October 24th, 2024 at home.
Jack was born and raised in greater Flint, Michigan and, after graduating from Central Michigan University, moved to Santa Barbara, California, where he completed his masters degree and pursued a doctoral degree in Latin American History. He loved the beauty of both of those states and equally loved the grandeur and history of his adopted state, Virginia.
Jack was proud to have served 22 years in the US Army and was a disabled veteran. He served two tours in Germany totaling 7 years, a year in Korea, any many stateside assignments. His last assignment was Ft. Monroe where he retired in 1992 after a distinguished and honorable career. Whenever possible, Jack volunteered his time and efforts to his community both at home and overseas.
Once retired from the Army, Jack worked as a government contractor at Ft. Eustis heading up the newly created outplacement center. Starting in 1998, Jack and his wife Carol began a many year adventure traveling well over 300,000 miles in their five motor homes. They visited every state in the union several times, both coasts frequently, and nearly every National Park. They also circumnavigated all five Great Lakes, visited most of the Canadian Provinces including the Maritime Provinces, to include Newfoundland and Labrador and drove the Alaska-Canadian (ALCAN) Highway to Alaska. Additionally they cruised throughout the Caribbean, in the Mediterranean, and made the trip of a lifetime to Australia and New Zealand. Whenever humanly possible, Jack would go fishing along the way.
Jack lived his life believing that every day there was something new to be learned, or see, or do, and he never understood how anyone could be bored. Life was full, every day, and tomorrow would always bring a new adventure. On extended motorhome trips, there was always a road less traveled and just around the bend in the road, a scenic byway or someplace new just waiting to be explored. We will miss his quick wit and great sense of humor and his stories.
Jack and Carol were Red Cross Disaster Volunteers. They had many assignments but the most memorable was at the Fresh Kills Landfill recovery site in Staten Island, NY. immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Eugene Lundy and Thelma Eveline McLeod Lundy and by his elder sister, Jan Eva (Lundy) Parker, her husband, Don, and a grandson, David Veen Schilpp.
He is survived by his best friend, companion and loving wife since 1992, Carol. He is also survived by his two sons, Jim and Gwen and grandsons Nick and Andrew; and Dave and Maggie and grandsons Aiden and Colin. He is also survived by Carol's three daughters and their families, Robbie and Don Gresham and grandchildren Casey (Eddie) and great grandson, Cal, Dillon (Colleen) and Bradley (Lisa Marie); Carmen and Roy Maddocks, and grandson Robert; and Krista and Rob Anderson and grandchildren Matthew and Lindsay. Jack loved taking them all camping, particularly the grandchildren. He was so very proud of each of his 11 grandchildren.
Friends desiring to honor Jack's memory with a charitable contribution are encouraged to donate to any of numerous organizations which provide support to widows and children of military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country or locally, to the Children's' Hospital of the King's Daughters.
