August 27, 1941 – November 26, 2022
J.W. Whiting Chisman, Jr. passed away on November 26, 2022, at his home with his family and friends around him.
Whiting was born on August 27, 1941, to J.W Whiting Chisman, Sr., and Elizabeth Winne Chisman. He was raised in the Wythe section of Hampton, VA and was a member of the Hampton High School Class of 1959. He attended Randolph Macon College, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.
At a young age, Whiting began working for his father at Chisman Company. He became President following his father's retirement. With the Chisman Company team, Whiting grew the company to include five plants, a gravel yard, a concrete crushing facility and eighty trucks that served the Peninsula. Chisman Company concrete was used to build the Hampton Coliseum, runways at Langley Air Force Base, Interstate 64 and the Hampton Roads and Monitor Merrimac tunnels. Whiting guided the company to a successful acquisition in 1987 and retired from the concrete industry.
Whiting participated in his community throughout his life. He was a dedicated member of the Hampton Rotary Club, serving twice as President. Whiting was proud to have been a member of the Randolph Macon College Board of Trustees. He served in leadership roles with many organizations, most notably St John's Episcopal Church, the Virginia Air and Space Center, the James River Country Club, and the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia.
During his retirement, Whiting enjoyed playing golf with his son, grandsons and golfing buddies, spending time on Hilton Head Island and following his beloved NY Yankees.
Whiting is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donna Whetzel Chisman, his brother James Reade Chisman (Anne), his two children, J. W. Whiting Chisman III (Kristin), Elizabeth Chisman Moon (Page) his four grandchildren, J.W. Whiting Chisman IV, Fletcher August Chisman, Clark Thiel Chisman, Kennon Whiting Moon, his nieces and many dear cousins and lifelong friends.
