Newport News, Va. – Ivan Coates McLean (Mac), Retired Coast Guard Commander, 99, previously of Westover Road passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018 in a nursing home and assisted living center, the Newport, on Warrick Avenue. A native of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, he had been a resident of Hampton Roads most of his life. Mac was preceded in death by six brothers and a sister, his first wife of 39 years, Eleanor Cope, and his second wife of 22 years, Hugette Golden, and his only daughter, Judith Hudson.
Mac held a B.A. Degree in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master's degree from the George Washington University. He also studied at Temple University Law School. He retired as a Commander from the U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) after 26 years of service. During WWII, Mac served under the U. S. Navy as a landing craft officer and was awarded eight battle stars for operations in the Pacific Theatre.
Following WWII, Mac served on a variety of USCG vessels including the Norfolk based " Madrona" as commanding officer .At the time of his retirement , he was serving as senior commanding officer in the Panama Canal zone. Then, after leaving military service, he worked at the Newport News Shipyard, the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority and as a math instructor at Tidewater Community College. Mac thoroughly enjoyed his docent work at the Mariner Museum. While traveling around the world visiting Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, he toured the Great Wall, China, climbed Mt. Fuji, Japan and visited the Taj Mahal, India. Mac was also active in many sports but favored golf where he cherished his low handicap and his three holes in one!
The Commander lived his life with a deep reverence for God and believed he had his own angel, who protected him during his many exposures to life threatening situations.
He is survived by his only son, Richard and his wife Barbara of Manchester, Maryland as well as his grandson, Andrew Duart McLean and his wife Rebecca, with great-grandson Cameron James, and two step grandchildren of the marriage, Chris Odell and Hope Ripkin and their children. Also surviving are Charles Hudson III, his son-in-law, of Virginia Beach and a granddaughter E. Claire Bailey and her husband, Kevin, of Richmond with two great grandsons Scott Patrick Bailey and Hudson Coates Bailey; and two step-daughters from his second marriage, Michele Smith of Newport News and Patricia Shaw of Davidson, South Carolina and their husbands and children.
The family will receive friends from 10-12:00 PM Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions in Hampton. Later in the afternoon at 2:00 PM, a graveside service will be conducted in Princess Anne Memorial Park in Virginia Beach. Mac will be laid to rest with full military honors with his first wife, "Ellie".
Following the graveside, at 4:00 PM, a reception celebrating his long life will be held for friends and family at Dockside Restaurant, 3311 Shore Drive in Virginia Beach. The family wishes to thank Mac's many caregivers, especially Kate, who also was his loyal friend.
