Dr. Irving Vincent Behm, age 96, of Hampton, died June 11, 2018, at home after a short illness having just celebrated his 71st wedding anniversary with his wife and family who he dearly loved.
Irving Vincent Behm was born December 8, 1921, in a small village in Woodville, Wisconsin, to Julius and Mable Behm. He graduated from a small high school in Woodville, in 1939. Dr. Behm married Ann Johnson on June 7, 1947.
Dr. Behm attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where he earned his Bachelors of Science degree. He continued his education at various universities.
Before he joined the Army, he established a mechanic school at Curtis-Wright Aircraft Co. in Columbus, Ohio and later became a teacher working there. The Army sent him to North Carolina for basic training, then to Yale University where he became a second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corp. After which he established a production line program for inspections and maintenance for B-24 aircrafts at Langley Field. He resigned from the Army after completing a tour of occupied Japan in World War II. He then attended Marquette University where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery. Dr. Behm retired after practicing Dentistry for 35 years in Hampton.
Dr. Behm was a member of Central Methodist Church in Hampton, member and past commodore of Hampton Yacht Club, Founder and member of Merrimac Investment club, member and Past President of the Peninsula Dental Assn, Director at Old Point National Bank for 20 years, past member of Hampton Lions Club, and member of the Peninsula Retired Men ' s Club.
As a hobby, Dr. Behm enjoyed doing woodwork- mainly furniture, yardwork, planting/rutting boxwood and enjoyed golfing. He began singing at a very young age at many local and national churches and on radio shows. He sang and played with several dance bands at colleges and national military bases. In later years, he was asked to join a group of singers at the Carnegie Hall.
He is survived by his wife, Ann J. Behm, two children, I. Vincent Behm Jr (Amy) of Hampton, Cynthia Behm Halliday of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, David Halliday (Elizabeth), William Halliday (Emily), Irving Behm III-Tripp (Becca), Christopher Behm (Christine); one great grandchild, Irving Vincent Behm IV and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Vernon.
Funeral Services will be at Central United Methodist Church, 225 Chapel St., Hampton by Rev. Booker Brown, June 16th at 2:30 pm. Interment will follow at Clark Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to Clark Cemetery, 9 Riding Path, Hampton, VA 23669 or Central Methodist church in Hampton.
