IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Iris Carr
Geer
March 11, 1920 – November 12, 2013
Born March 11, 1920 Iris Jane Carr Geer, beloved mother, grandmother, great Nana, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at the age of 93. Daughter of the late Art and Della Mae Carr, Iris wasborn and raised in Fertile, Iowa, America's heartland. She often reminisced about the good life as seen from the back of her pony. Iris always held dear the values she learned during her childhood. Her generous and compassionate nature coupled with a strong work ethic were evidenced in everything she did.
After graduating from high school and Mason City's Hamilton Business College, Iris and her late husband E. Barton Geer moved to Hampton, Va. where they were employed at NACA/NASA. After enjoying a distinguished and challenging career for many years, Iris briefly retired before being tapped as the first financial officer for the newly opened Hampton Public Library gift shop. Sheexcelled in numbers and perfection so this was a perfect match for her talents and the job was a labor of love for 20 years and a time of cultivating many special friendships.
Iris Jane was an avid reader as well a great listener. She was genuinely interested in everyone else's life and was always there if needed. She also loved music. She grew up appreciating the big band sounds and often danced at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. Then in later years she went with the times and became fully engaged with the rock and roll erabeing enjoyed by her teenage family. Home with Mrs. Geer was a favorite gathering place for her daughters' friends and for years many of these "young folks" have continued to keep in touch.
Iris was predeceased by her brother R. Duane Carr and former husband, E. Barton Geer.
She is survived by loving daughters Diane Geer Wood (Paul) of Charlottesville, and Cheryl Geer Gresham (Winslow) of Hampton. "Nana" was devoted to her grandchildren and for years had a whole room dedicated to their pictures and notes. They include William G. Lesemann III and Lindsay Lesemann Kingoff (Joe) of Richmond; Connie Barritt Grizzard
(Mark) and Bryce H. Barritt (Renee) of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and six great- grandsons: Barritt, Hayden, Logan, Reese, Ivey, and Austin.
Iris enjoyed her years residing at the Devonshire Retirement Community where the staff and residents were the best. It was there that she met Cheryl McCloud and Shavonda Eley who became her loving caretaker helpers who always got a laugh from her. A special thank you goes to them along with Lynne Smith Vermillion who was a very caring and fun friend to her for many years. Her frequent visits were ones to which Iris Jane always looked forward.
Even during her latter days in which Iris dealt with failing health , her humor and sweet smile always prevailed in addition to her humble appreciation and gratitude generously bestowed upon family and staff. Those at Northampton Convalescent and Rehab Center were extremely kind and helpful.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 15, at First Presbyterian Church, Hampton, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Cynthia Rosser Higgins. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service in the church Commons area.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday , November 16, in Monticello Memory Gardens, Charlottesville, with the Rev. Dr. Christopher S. Martin officiating.
Arrangements are under the care of R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton, and Hill and Wood Funeral Home, Charlottesville. Those wishing to honor Iris with a memorial contribution, may do so to First Presbyterian Church, 516 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton, Va. 23669 or to a special charity of your choice.
