Imogene J. Carter, 85, died Monday, August 19, 2024. A lifelong Hampton resident, she worked in the cafeteria at both Syms Middle School and Kecoughtan High School for many years. She was a member at Langley Christian Church and participated in the arts and crafts program there. Imogene and her husband enjoyed camping for many years, and, after his death, she bought a space at Indian Acres in Thornburg. She enjoyed sewing and cross stitch and collecting dolls.

Imogene was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Gene Carter, a daughter, Roxanne Posey, a son, Harvey Jeffrey Carter, and a grandson, Cameron Riss. Survivors include her daughters, Dreama Shields and husband, Benny, Laura Sinks, and Angie Riss and husband, Skip all of Hampton; five grandchildren, Kara Maples and husband Kevin of Hampton, David Posey and wife, Amber of Florida, Jeremy Carter, Sr. of Hampton, PJ Carter of Hampton, and Chance Carter of Virginia Beach; seven great-grandchildren, Krystena Vigeant, Melissa Maples, Oliver Posey, Crystal Carter and husband, Steven Hammond, Jeremy Carter, Jr., Julia New, Gavin Carter, and Cameron Riss II; and two great-great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Evelyn Hammond.

The family will receive friends from 11a.m.-noon on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home with a funeral service beginning at noon. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.  The family invites you to join for a reception after interment at Langley Christian Church on Fox Hill Rd. in Hampton.

There will also be a brief moment during this service to remember the life of Imogene's son, Harvey Jeffrey Carter, who died July 12, 2024.
