Hugh John Macneil went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, February 23rd, 2018. He was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia in 1952 to Hugh John and Esther Elisabeth Macneil.
At the age of twenty, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as an airplane mechanic for three years, seeing much of Europe and Morocco. He then came to America, became a citizen, and joined the United States Air Force, in which he served four years. Hugh then held various jobs, met his future wife, Sylvia Fay Nightingale, whom he married on September 11th, 1960. He then became employed at Newport News Shipbuilding where he worked for thirty-four years.
Hugh's reputation as the "Bicycle man'" was well known, as he pedaled his bike to and from work throughout his career at the shipyard. His hobbies included tending to his huge garden, and wood working. He loved children, and upon retirement, he became a volunteer, reading and working with the students of Christopher Craft Elementary School. He and his wife were lifelong members of First United Church of Christ, where he was a Sunday School teacher to the grade school children.
Survivors include, Daughter, Melanie Shemer; son, Michael Macneil, grandson, Arron Macneil, all of Hampton; brother, George Macneil of Manitoba, Canada and cousin Lawrence Macneil of Reno, NV.
A memorial service will be conducted 1:00 PM Friday, March 2, 2018 at First United Church of Christ, 1017 Todd's Lanes, in Hampton. In lieu of flowers, any memorial donations be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association. www.lbda.org/donate .
