It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Herbert Ray Johnson, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Herb passed away on March 20, 2026, at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and dedication.
Herb was born on September 12, 1935, in Hampton, Virginia, a place he called home throughout his life. Growing up in this community, he developed a love for craftsmanship and a passion for working with his hands. This passion led him to the Newport News Shipbuilding apprentice program, where he graduated and later became a dedicated instructor in sheet metal. For 39 years, Herb shared his expertise and wisdom with countless apprentices, shaping not only their careers but also their lives. Even after his retirement, his commitment to nurturing young talents never waned as he returned as a consultant to continue apprentice training.
Herb's career was a testament to his hard work and unwavering dedication, but it was his personal life that truly defined him. In June 1965, he married the love of his life, Myrtle Sisson Whitley. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared a journey filled with love and laughter. Herb is survived by his devoted wife, Myrtle, who stood by his side for over six decades, and his children: Laurie (Van) Coble, Mark (Shawn) Johnson, Chris (Therese) Johnson, Alan (Sandy) Johnson, Beth Johnson, and Claudia (Lewis) Johnson. He was also a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Herb was predeceased by his beloved son, Lewis D. Johnson, whose memory he carried with him always.
A man of deep faith, Herb found solace and strength in his daily readings of the Bible. His Christian beliefs were the cornerstone of his life, influencing his actions and the way he treated others. Herb was known for his warm personality, often brightening the days of those around him with his playful puns and genuine interest in their lives. He had a remarkable ability to make everyone he met feel welcome and appreciated, always offering a word of thanks for their service and help.
Among his many passions, Herb found joy in model ship building and various construction projects. His love for creating and building was evident in his hobbies, which included an enthusiasm for DIY projects.
Herbert Ray Johnson, Jr. will be remembered not only for his many accomplishments but also for the warmth and kindness he brought into the lives of everyone he encountered. His legacy is one of love, generosity, and a life well-lived.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects and celebrate Herb's life on March 31, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, located at 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton, VA 23669. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Herbert’s name to a charity of your choice, reflecting his generous spirit and love for helping others.
Herb's presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire us all. May he rest in eternal peace.
