Obituary

Henry J. Van Dyke II, 94, Lt. Col, US Army, Retired, died Saturday, May 11, 2024. Born in Midland Park, NJ, he was a graduate of Pompton Lake High School and attended vocational training for mechanical drafting prior to joining the US Army when the Korean War started in 1950.

During his military career, Lt. Col. Van Dyke attended many military schools including officer training, parachute training, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He also attended the Universities of Georgia, North Carolina and Maryland while in service.  There were many Army posts including, Korea, Germany and Vietnam and many awards including three Bonze Stars for valor and meritorious service, two Combat Infantry Badges for action in Korea and Vietnam, and a Master Parachutist Badge. After retirement, Lt. Col. Van Dyke was a life member of the E.S. Officer's Candidate School, the 82nd Airborne Division, 17th Infantry Regiment and Korean War Veterans Associations.

Following his military career, Lt Col Van Dyke worked 20 years at the Surry Nuclear Power Station retiring in 1995. He had been active with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America; was a member of the Tide Mill Farms Civic Assoc where he had served as Treasurer and 2nd Vice President; a member of the Exchange Club of Wythe where he was Club Secretary and Board Member for many years and won Distinguished and Outstanding Club Secretary for many years and was awarded Exchangite of the Year twice; was a life member of the VFW; and a life member of both the US Golf Association and PGA Partners Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry J. Van Dyke Sr and Laurina Van Lenten Van Dyke and step father George Korver Sr; dearly beloved wife, Marian F.J. "Juanita" Van Dyke; daughter, Randal Downing; three brothers, Walter Van Dyke, William Van Dyke and George Korver Jr.; and sisters, Annabelle Kallenberg and Alice Boonstra.

Survivors include three sons, Henry J. Van Dyke III, Keith L. Cleghorn; Leonard V. Cleghorn III; daughter, Janett Hoke; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Friday, May 17, 2024, at R. Hayden Smtih Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave, Hampton.

Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Assoc, the American Cancer Society or the Arthritic Assoc.
