Henry W. Guilford, Sr., 87, after his fight with Mesothelioma, died Monday, June 13, 2022 with his son Hank at his side. Born in Phoebus, he was a Peninsula resident for most of his life.  He joined the US Navy in 1954 and served as a firefighter and boiler technician until his retirement in 1973. He then went to work at Hampton General Hospital as a boiler tech for the next 10 years, and not one to stay idle, went to work for Hardaway Construction and then to Southern Furniture and Storage over the next 20 years. It was then that he finally retired to be able to spend his time with his wife Kitty and fishing.

Henry truly believed in Love Thy Neighbor. Preceded in death by his parents, Percival and Mary Sadler Guilford, his stepchildren, Dale Oaks and James Turner, and other family members; Henry is survived by his wife, Catherine (Kitty) Guilford; his son, Henry Guilford, Jr (Michele), daughters Lisa Malla (Rick), Marilyn Modlin (Michael), Stepchildren, Claude Gilmartin (Barbara), Cheryl Turner, Theresa Helfrich (David), Kathie Stokes (John); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Nancy Anderson; and other family members.

A memorial service with full Navy honors will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at the Albert G. Horton, Jr., State Veterans' Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk.
