IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Henry Duncan
Garnett, Jr.
July 24, 1944 – January 13, 2023
Henry Duncan Garnett, Jr., 78, passed away Friday, January 13, 2023 at home surrounded by his family. Born in Norfolk he grew up in Newport News where he attended Warwick High School. He was graduated from the College of William and Mary (BA 1968) and from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law (JD 1972) where he was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa honorary leadership society.
Duncan began his practice of law in Newport News as an associate, then partner, with Jones, Blechman, Woltz & Kelly. In 1978, Duncan and his brother, Jeff, established the law firm, Garnett & Garnett, in Louisa County, Virginia. In 1999, he returned to the Peninsula where he practiced law as a partner with Patten, Wornom, Hatten & Diamonstein.
Preceded in death by his parents, Judge Henry D. Garnett and Frances Williams Garnett, he is survived by his wife, Diana; children – Henry Duncan Garnett III, Caroline Garnett Ledbetter (Jordan), Michael Reed McAllister (Ellen) and Douglas Neil McAllister; grandchildren – Reed Everett McAllister and John Beckwith McAllister; brothers – R. Jefferson Garnett (Cochran) and Lloyd M. (Doc) Garnett (Barbara) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and so many wonderful friends.
Duncan loved serving his community, his church, his family, his clients, and friends. This service was reflected in his active involvement in numerous organizations, each of which were important to him. Included among those were: St. John's Episcopal Church (Vestry), Hampton Yacht Club (Past Commodore), Hampton Arts Foundation (Past President), Virginia Trial Lawyers' Association (Past President), Southern Trial Lawyers Association (Board of Directors), Virginia College of Trial Advocacy (Board of Directors and Faculty) and the Newport News Bar Association (Past President).
Duncan loved the saltwater life of fishing and boating along the Chesapeake Bay aboard The Pearl. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed waterfowl and upland bird shooting, bird dogs and retrievers (and one hapless bulldog, Harry.)
A funeral service will be conducted at St. John's Episcopal Church, Hampton, Virginia at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday January 21, 2023, by the Rev. Samantha Vincent-Alexander and the Rev. Mark Riley. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at a reception following the services.
