Obituary

Helen St. Julien Marshall Fedziuk, of Hampton, VA, passed away quietly on Friday, February 4, 2022, at the age of 102 1/2.

She was born, the seventh of nine children, on July 28, 1919, to  parents Sarah Elizabeth Niemeyer Marshall (Bessie) and Rev. Myron Barraud Marshall in Norfolk, VA. Helen is survived by her daughters Julia Marshall Fedziuk and Elizabeth Fedziuk Harris; and scores of nieces and nephews.  She was preceded by her husband, Henry A. Fedziuk; her son Henry A. Fedziuk, Jr; and her siblings Louise McCrensky (Eddie), Elizabeth Diggs (Dudley), Catherine Hamill (Bob), Myron Marshall Jr. (Peggy), Herman Marshall (Jean), Richard Marshall (Clara), John Marshall (Gladys), and Arthur Marshall (Isabelle).

Helen spent her childhood in Halifax, VA. While attending Halifax High School she excelled in sports and was named all county guard in basketball.

Helen graduated from Chatham Hall in 1936.  She went on to attend college at her beloved Alma Mater, William and Mary. She graduated in 1943 with a degree in Biology and was inducted as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. After college she worked as a mathematician for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA which later became NASA) where she met her husband of 67 years, Henry A. Fedziuk whom she married in 1947.

She was committed to the local community.  She was one of the founding members of The Thursday Sewing Group, participated in local bridge groups.  She was a long-term member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hampton and was a member of the Church's St. Anne's Guild (she was part of the needle workers who made the needlepoint pillows around the alter).

She taught mathematics at Thorpe jr. High School; and was a reference librarian at Charles H. Taylor Memorial Library (students' term papers were based on the reference material Helen found them).

In her 50s she began swimming competitively and was a member of a master's swimming program.  At a National Master's Competition, she placed first in several events of her age group.

To say that Helen was proud to be a Virginian is an understatement. She loved her state, and its history. She was most proud of her ancestral grandfather John Marshall, Fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. She was a driving force in documenting the genealogy of her extensive family and insuring recognition for their achievements. She was the motivating force in updating the genealogical record book "Niemeyer, Chandler, Lawson and Calvert Families".  She also was a consultant/contributor to the published book "With Paintbrush & Shovel" which documents a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project that consisted of water color paintings (artist Bessie Niemeyer – Helen's mother) of Lee Park's (Petersburg, VA) wildflowers and their dried specimens (Donald Holden).

Helen became the matriarch of Bessie and Myron's decedents.  She always enjoyed being with family, reading family letters, discussing family (both past and present).  Helen, and several other family members organized the first Bessie Myron Marshall reunion in 1980 at the Chamberlain Hotel.  The family has been having reunions ever since. Cousins have formed strong bonds which are priceless.

Helen was renowned (in the neighborhood) for her commitment to walking.  At 97 she was walking 1.4 miles each day.  In 2017, She fell (not when walking) and broke her hip.  Due to her determination by the end of that year she was back to walking her 1.4 miles. Even being 102 she would walk up to ½ mile each day.  This inspired her daughters and her neighbors.

The family expresses our gratitude to Helen's caregivers who brought quality and relevance to her life for over ten years. Due to their support, she was able to live independently at her home until last May.  Without them,  her life would not have been as enriched.

The family expresses many thanks to Helen's nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, great grand nieces and great grand nephews (you get the point) for all their love, attention, family interest, and project support.  Helen so enjoyed a "family project" and nieces and nephews etc. would come to her aid.  Those "family projects," documenting family history, meant the world to her.

A memorial service, to celebrate her life, will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, February 28, 2022, at St. John's Episcopal Church by Rev. Mark Riley.  For those unable to attend in person, St. John's will live stream the service via their website:  www.stjohnshampton.org.  At the top of their home page there will be a link to Helen's Memorial service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations, in Helen's name, be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 100 W. Queens Way, Hampton, VA 23669
