Obituary

Helen Dorace Powell Bartlett passed away on Friday, May 23, 2014. She was born July 19, 1916 to parents, Daisy Sykes Powell and Fenton Thomas Powell in Isle of Wight County. Helen spent her early years on a farm and attended rural schools while learning sewing skills from her great aunt. Helen's family moved to Hampton when she was 10 years old where she attended Armstrong School, George Wythe School and graduated from Hampton High School in 1934. While working in her stepfather's grocery store she met her future husband, Frederick Charles Bartlett. After the marriage in 1936 they had three sons, James E. George R. and William C. Bartlett. In addition to her three sons she is survived by her stepdaughter, Beverly Hendrix of Gloucester, VA, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. After attending Newport News Business College, Helen worked at the Chamberlain Hotel, Langley Credit Union, Morgan-Marrow Insurance Company, Orkin Extermination Company and Levinson Real Estate and Insurance Company where she obtained her real estate license. After success in real estate sales she purchased and operated a successful business making and altering clothes and custom draperies. She alternated between sewing and real estate for the next few years. Helen was a member of Memorial Baptist Church for 89 years and served many places including WMU, tellers committee and secretary of the Gleaners Sunday School Class. She always said God is so good. He sees to it that all my needs are met. In 1981, she retired and began a life of volunteer work at Hampton General Hospital and Colonial Place Women's Club as well as loved working her flower and vegetable garden. The family will receive friends, Tuesday from 1-2 PM at Memorial Baptist Church, Hampton with a funeral service immediately following at 2 PM with Rev. Lawrence Biermann and Rev. Terry Spencer officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the building fund of Memorial Baptist Church.
