Obituary

Hazel Mae Marsh Rippe, 89, entered into eternal rest on February 22, 2018. She was the only child born to John and Ada Marsh in Warrington, Lancashire, England. She served briefly in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force of the Royal Air Force.   In 1959 she met and married the love of her life, Adolph G. Rippe (Rip), USAF. They were stationed in the U.S. where Rip passed away suddenly at the age of 45. In 1966 Hazel came to Hampton, Virginia to visit her childhood friend, Joan Placanica and loved it so much she decided to stay. Joan's family became her family. She worked in their restaurant, The Blue Marlin, and later worked at Smith's Florist.

After Hazel moved to Hampton, she and Joan became more like sisters and many referred to them as The Golden Girls. They proudly became U.S. Citizens together in 1973, being among the first group to be sworn in at Williamsburg, Virginia. Hazel and Joan were members of the Daughters of the British Empire and the Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association, where they met and made many devoted friends.

Hazel was the epitome of your best friend and your favorite Aunt. She loved animals, babies, shopping, dancing and singing. It wasn't unusual to see her on the floor playing with all of the children in the family, laughing and acting silly. Her energy and love for life inspired everyone to get up and move and enjoy the day. She loved going for long walks, finished with a cuppa tea and a visit with friends. If she wasn't up and moving you would find her at the beach in the summer and knitting in the winter. She also had a green thumb and her patio looked like an English garden with greenery and baskets of beautiful flowers.

Hazel is survived by Joan's family, her daughter, Roxanne Liakos (Thomas); three grandchildren Jennifer Pendleton (Andy), Nicholas Liakos (Katie), Caitlin Liakos; four great-grandchildren Thomas, Joseph, Kathryn, Olivia; and Joan's former husband Lou Placanica (Ann).

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff and caregivers of Commonwealth Senior Living and Medi Home Health and Hospice.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Hazel and Joan at 10 a.m Wednesday, March 14 at Berceuse Funeral and Crematorium in Hampton.   In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Back Door Ministry at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Newport News, VA.
