Harold Leon Hauer, "Hal," was born on July 15, 1942 in Detroit Michigan.  He was the eldest child of Morris and Bessie Hauer. Hal received his early education in the Detroit Public School system and Hebrew School.  He became Bar-Mitzvah in June 1955.

Hal enlisted in the United States Army in 1961 and served until his Honorable Discharge in 1964.  During his college studies at Wayne State University, he discovered his love of teaching, and he became a teacher with the Detroit Public School System.  Hal was a mathematics teacher, and then a Math Specialist responsible for training and supporting other math teachers in Detroit Region 1 schools.  He dedicated his life to teaching, coaching and mentoring his students and encouraging them to strive for excellence in their studies and their lives.

During this time, he met Gloria Mosley while they were attending graduate classes at Wayne State University.  They were married in Nov 1976. Hal continued to teach math and Academic Games.  He coached several teams to winning multiple state and national championships in mathematics and logic.

Hal and Gloria moved to Virginia in 1983, where he pursued his love of writing after retiring from teaching. Hal was quite the athlete.
