Obituary

H. Marshall Booker went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 23, 2025 at the age of 90.  Born in Newport News, VA on January 12,1935, he was the son of Henry and Evelyn Booker.  Marshall is survived by his wife of 61 years, Porter Cheatwood Phillips Booker, and their children and spouses; Kasey Campbell, son-in-law, Sinclair B. McCracken (Bob), Paige B. Shoun (Scott) and M. Phillips Booker, (Jacki).  Marshall is also survived by their grandchildren, Nelson Campbell, Mary Stuart Campbell Taylor (Josh), William Shoun (Ashley), Samuel Shoun (Taylor), Andrew McCracken (Ava), Kendall McCracken, Sydney Booker, Carter Booker, and Lucy Booker; and great grandsons Everett Shoun and Landon Shoun.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, DeMott B. Campbell.

Marshall grew up in Hampton and was graduated from Hampton High School in 1953.  Growing up in the Wythe area he always liked to go fishing, soft and hard shell crabbing, swimming, biking, and baseball.  He grew up with music from Country to Classical and everything in between, while studying saxophone, organ, guitar, and piano and singing in high school, church and college concert and travel choirs.  As a youngster he attended both St. Paul's Episcopal Church (Newport News) and Hampton Christian Church (Disciples).  After high school he attended Lynchburg College (University) graduating in 1959 in Business Administration/Accounting.  He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from The University of Virginia in 1965 sponsored through a scholarship by the United States Department of Education.  He has always been blessed by and thankful for all those who helped and encouraged him through their acts of kindness and financial generosity along his path in so many ways, especially through his college days.  He is also grateful for all the friendships and laughs by being adopted by his wife's Newport News High School Class of 1957.

Marshall and Porter met when they worked together in the summers at the Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue in Newport News.  They were married on June 22, 1963 in St. John's Episcopal Church, Hampton. Marshall's first full-time teaching position was at Salem College, Winston-Salem, NC where he and his wife lived and where their first child was born.  He then taught at Frederick College, Portsmouth before taking a position at Old Dominion University for several years.  In 1969 he accepted a full-time administrative position at Christopher Newport College (University) as The Dean of the Faculty.  Over the years he held several other administrative appointments while teaching Economics, Business Math, International Business, etc.

At one time or another he served as Chairman, Dept. Economics, Director of the Graduate Studies, Director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research and Editor of the Peninsula Business Report, and Director of the Students in Free Enterprise program.  He was faculty advisor/member of Sigma Pi Fraternity, member of Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Psi National Business Fraternity, (CNU) and others.  While employed at Christopher Newport he was awarded a one-semester fully paid sabbatical which he chose to spend in research and study at the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond in the Economic Research Department and to do research at the Federal Reserve in Washington, DC.  After retirement from Christopher Newport in 2002 he was especially honored to be awarded a J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship through the United States Department of State to teach at the Azerbaijan State Economic University in Baku on the Caspian Sea.

Marshall had a deep love of his God, his family, friends, church, country, profession, students, colleagues and all others around the world where he traveled.  He believed in helping others in their journey of life, and served as President of the Thomas Nelson, Jr. Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, Poquoson Middle School PTA, Poquoson High School PTA, Poquoson Lions Club, and Virginia Association of Economists. In addition, he was a Volunteer and Facilitator of the York County Master Gardeners Program, and named York County Volunteer of the Year.  He also volunteered with Lackey Free Medical Clinic, as well as being a volunteer with local area schools teaching 1st and 2nd grade students about money and economics and serving often with local radio and television stations as a commentator/analyst.  He was also involved in the Poquoson Primary School System in teaching the Art In A Suitcase Program introducing young students to artists, general art history, and various arts and crafts techniques.  He also served as Lector, Chalicer, and Senior Warden of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Newport News.  He was proud to be a member of the Alumni Board of Directors at Lynchburg College.  In 1991, he was particularly honored to be recognized by the Alumni Society of Lynchburg College as a recipient of the T. Gibson Hobbs Award for meritorious achievement and service, in three areas; church, community and human welfare, and Alma Mater recognition.  This is the highest honor bestowed on an alumnus or alumna of Lynchburg College (Univ.).

He loved to sail, kayak, canoe, play tennis, spend time with his family and friends on the Outer Banks, read at length, listen to music, study languages (Spanish, French, German, and Arabic), and of course to travel throughout five continents.  He sometimes was able to arrange for students to accompany him and often, along with colleagues, to conferences, presentations, classes, and study programs in the United States and abroad, especially in Europe, Mexico, and Costa Rica.  He was an avid fan of the Washington Commanders, Baltimore Orioles, all Poquoson, University of Lynchburg and The University of Virginia sports programs and traveled with his family to countless events.

He was honored to be awarded by the American Society for Engineering Education as an Educational Program Fellow at The National Research Center, NASA, Hampton, and with The United States Department of the Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio during several summers.  He truly felt it was a great opportunity to be able to study and work closely with such a knowledgeable and devoted group of scientists, engineers, lawyers, staff and administrators, civilian and military.

In the 1980's, Marshall and two academic colleagues at Hampton Roads Academy, Katherine (Kitty) Booth and Eleanor Day organized a program of study in the summers for local rising senior high school students.  The program was called Business and Economics of the Free Enterprise System.  Four days a week for the summer months students were assigned to various businesses and organizations as a subsidized intern. Fridays, students met for lectures and field trips throughout the community as part of their study.  The entire program was sponsored by Hampton Roads Academy and the local business community.  The program was nominated for recognition by the Joint Council on Economic Educations. The program was recognized and came in fourth in the 18th Annual Awards Program for the development of experimental programs in the teaching of Business and Economics at the high school level.

Furthermore, Marshall was indeed excited to be included in a group of academics and others to be invited to spend time in Brazil studying and doing research in their particular fields especially related to economic and environmental sustainability.  At the University in São Paulo, they attended lectures, classes, conferences, etc., as well as being able to spend time with students.  Additionally, they spent some time in the favelas (poor areas) in São Paulo then continued their studies going up along the Atlantic Coast toward Rio de Janeiro.  In addition, it was a special treasure to be a member of a medical, construction, educational, and water purification, Mission Team to Honduras (Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, Yorktown), where he served with the medical team as translator and aide.  He also loved being a part of a medical, construction, and teaching Mission Team to the Eastern Shore of Virginia (Tabernacle United Methodist Church, Poquoson).

The family would like to thank the staff and providers at Thimble Shoals Family Medicine for their love and medical care over the years.  Also, the family is deeply grateful to Taylor Shoun, Cherrika, Jessica, and Noel for the comfort they provided Marshall over his last two weeks.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 45 Main Street, Hilton Village, Newport News with a reception to follow in the parish hall of St. Andrews.  The burial will be private.
